Americans
today are generally aware that we have much more energy per capita
consumption than most of the peoples of the world, more than four times
the world average and twice regions such as Japan and Europe, a
comparable standard of living enjoyment. Most
of us think about home, gas and electric bills, plus the fuel pumped
into our cars' gas tanks in the assessment of our personal energy
footprints.But in reality, all "things" Americans hope that it contributes most significantly to our total energy consumption. To truly understand, we must first get a handle on the way societies use energy.
How we use energy
By
convention, the energy-intensive activities of the society is divided
into four sectors: residential, commercial, industrial and
infrastructure. The
residential sector indicates that the energy used to our homes (to
power lighting, appliances and heating and cooling systems) and run on
15%, it is the second-smallest piece of cake. At
40%, the transport sector is the largest, but includes all energy
imported in both people and goods to move, it is by car, truck, train,
plane, ship or pipeline. Given
that about half of this amount goes to commute people, this means that
personal transportation and run our homes together accounted for only
about 35% of the energy we Americans use.An
additional 11% goes to meet the energy demands of commercial /
institutional buildings throughout the service of society, companies,
organizations and institutions, including schools, hospitals, prisons,
shops, restaurants, theaters, etc.-that spend all forms of energy for lighting, temperature control systems and devices such as computers and faxes. Although
relatively modest, the energy that these shared facets of society
supports overlooked by most of us at the sight of our energy footprint.Also
generally overlooked is our personal contribution to the industrial
sector, which 34% is in line with the energy absorbed in the performance
of both our homes and vehicles. This
sector includes production of all the things that makes the typical
American lifestyle, everything from burgers, clothes and golf clubs for
dishwashers, pharmaceuticals and satellites, plus all factory machines
that make things ... virtually any manufactured or processed object can be named. The energy used at each step in production is included, from extraction of raw materials to final assembly.And,
if you figure that about half of the transport sector energy is
channeled into moving commodities and goods around the world, a solid
half of the energy that supports the American lifestyle is to create and
bringing all produced and processed products on the market.
